Yesterday I had some down time and decided to watch the newest episode of Helluva Boss. how did it stack up to its previous episodes? Is this episode and series worth your watch? Who is even behind this youtube start-up animation series? That and more to follow!!
Disclaimer: I do not own anything related to the series, be that clips, artwork, etc. All that credit towards their respective creators. I hope to give my review and a spoiler free overview of the episode in case you have not watched it yet! With that out of the way let us jump right into the sixth episode of this amazing series!
Where can you find the episode?
I want to quickly add a link to the episode on the creators official page over on youtube. I wanted to link it first because I also want to talk about how I found out about this episode in particular. I found it through my youtube recommended, which is really awesome because there is always a fear that content geared towards adults, explicit or not, is not pushed well in the algorithm. I am no expert on the matter but I was very happy that, after creating a new vtuber account on youtube I was recommended this episode! I have not watched much on this new account either so thankfully, this series at least to me, seems like something youtube is promoting to my surprise. Anyways sorry for the small tangent onto the review of the episode!
Spoiler free events of the episode.
I want to go ahead and go over what the episode consists of, without spoiling important plot points so please bear with me! This episode in particular has a lot of staples from the past episodes, in regards to characters involved, adult humor, that hellish feeling to the characters. Whereas the last episode gave us some great lore about the world and some side characters being introduced, this episode is quite centrally focused when it comes to the cast. We see some amazing character development and learn a lot about those we are following so closely in the story. Also this episode is quite action heavy, while somehow at the same time able to sneak in a musical or two. So if you have been following the series and any of this sounds appealing please go and check it out.
Animation.
The animation of this series is totally top notch. The creator makes amazing use of the rules of animation when it comes to this series; and this episode not only hits the ground running in terms of animation, it improves upon some of the very minute issues from the last episode. Now, I said this in my last review and I will say it again, I am not very educated or informed on animation in general, but since my last review of the animation I have started creating very basic pixel animations myself, and I think it gives me an even greater appreciation on just how long something like this would take if you were a solo creator. I also have a new appreciation just for the fluidity and creativity taken with the animation direction and the character designs!
Unlike the last episode, I myself was unable to notice any framerate issues with the episode. I found that the last episode, when watched between different hardware and internet speeds, still had certain moments where it dropped in frames relative to the rest of the episode. I am happy to say that this did not seem to be the case for this episode. After hearing from a friend that this episode was quite action and combat heavy, like other episodes have been, I was ready to see a small artifact or two. This was not the case at all, they did such a fantastic job making the animation look heavy when needed, and look light and fluid in others. I really commend Vivzie and her amazing team for their work on this episodes animation.
The Team.
Speaking of, who was the team that did such amazing voice work, animation, and musical pieces? The end of her episode has a sizeable credits reel for her team that helped with the episode so I will just be covering the animation team, the voice cast, and the music directors as well as the creator. The main head of this project is Vivienne Medrano who produced, created, and directed this episode. She also wrote the episode with the help of Brandon Rogers. I am sure many watching know about Brandon Rogers but for brevity’s sake I will try not to delve into explanations of her whole team, check them out if you are interested!
I have said before and I will say again, the main voice cast is a stacked list. We have Brandon Rogers, Richard Horvitz, Vivian Nixon, Erica Lindbeck, Bryce Pinkham, Michael Romeo Ruocco, Erica Luttrell, Michael James Ruocco, Mara Wilson, and Jayden Libran. As I said there is some amazing voice talen here and when you listen to the episode this is made abundantly clear. Everyone here puts on a stellar performance, certainly something that can draw you into the characters even more at times!
As for the animation team we have the Amy Heard as the character animation lead. Upon checking out her twitter page you will see a lot of key animations that were used in the episode posted over there, and she did such a great job on them! The animation supervisor was Skye Henwood, and then there is a massive list of animators!
Lastly there is the music side of this production. The credits list the music by Jefferson Friedman with Matt Novack and Christopher French. That just leaves us with Sam Haft, the writer of what is the musical that sneaks its way into this episode. The sound design of every episode, not just this, is fantastic. I feel like not many stop to think about how amazing sound work can be when it comes to animation and storytelling as a whole. Just look at Ed, Edd, and Eddy for no better example on this matter. I felt that all the sound design was executed flawlessly and really sets the mood and draws you into the action!
Again, I want to say briefly that there were a lot more who worked on this project and they deserve all the praise in the world. If you want to check out the detailed credits please refer to the episode for all the amazing talent that was behind this project.
Score.
How would I score this episode of Helluva boss? If I had to score it based on a 1 to 10 scale I would certainly give this a 9 out of 10. This was a fantastic episode that kept me enthralled till the very last minute. The plot of this episode and the animation are all to die for. I am also not normally a musical type of person when it came to cartoons and movies but this one was really good and only adds to the episode itself. I of course, grade it on a small curve based on the fact that even though this is a big team, it certainly is small in respect to bigger animation companies. This was something that is Vivzie’s baby and you can tell she wanted this out no matter if it meant assembling a ragtag team of amazing talent or not. With that in mind I have little I can even think about that is wrong with this episode, only that it isn’t a perfect 10 solely because the episode ramps up very quickly. But that is such a minor gripe I will admit, because the whole time I was glued to the screen.
Closing thoughts.
I absolutely loved this episode and the humor contained in this series! I am in total anticipation for the next episode. I have liked every single episode in this series so far, but I feel that this may be a bit more of a memorable one at that.
