Today I want to review a candy that I found at a Raley’s grocery and pharmacy in my country. How good are they? Are they worth buying and trying for yourself if you love gummy candies? Let us find out.
Packaging.

I want to start by taking a look at the packaging first because as a consumer this is always be the thing that you notice first when it comes to a product. With that said the above packaging was the one that I did buy and I find it to be very effective. I find the colors to be very eye catching and the graphic used for the font and the background pictures of the fruit to all be super smooth and clean. they display to you what the flavor is but also spell it out in large font that makes it easy for the consumer to imagine the flavor of the candy and the texture as well. They say that they are the original texture of the fruit which, if you haven’t had a lychee before like me, makes you want to know how a gummy candy can be a texture of a fruit. If you google a lychee you find that the picture on the front of the package is exactly that, the lychee fruit and I love that aspect about their packaging, as most packages are the same between flavoring and just have the flavor of something written only in text. As they say a picture can say a thousand words. Lastly, I really appreciate that it is a resealable package to keep your candy fresh while you snack.
Ingredients and nutrition facts.

Next I want to look at the back of the package, because most consumers will check the back for nutrition information or check for allergies to specific ingredients. When looking at the back of the packaging I am glad to find that the best before date is written clearly on the bottom left of the packaging. I cannot stress enough how many times I have gone and looked for the best by date to see if an item of food is still good after having found it in my pantry or my fridge. More often than not it becomes a hunt to try and find the packaging’s listed best before or sell by date. Often times I find myself just throwing in the towel and tasting the food to see if it is still good or not, and often do still taste it even if I find the date.
Now when it comes to the nutrition facts, I don’t have much to say. I give this as a disclaimer for the ingredients as well but I am not a dietician, and would not consider myself very knowledgeable about what may constitute as healthy or not. Here I hope to give the simple facts of what it is made of and possibly what some ingredients are. As far as the nutrition facts, it is 180 calories for the whole package and because the package is small I think most people are like me and will eat it all in one sitting. It doesn’t seem to be made up of anything at all except carbs and sugars with not vitamins or nutrients. Carbs are in and of themselves just a different sugar. This is something I expected of a sugary, gummy candy.
- Ingredients are, from what I understand, always listed from what is most concentrated and used, to least used. Following that rule it makes sense that the top three you see are all just different types of sugars.
- Then we have sorbitol which is a sweetener used is sugar free foods. This is some great foreshadowing to the sweetness of the candy later.
- Next we get another ingredient that is mainly sugar, again, which is concentrated apple juice. I found it interesting that it wasn’t lychee juice.
- Gelatin, a staple in gummy candies for their texture. It is made from the collagen of animal parts meaning this candy is not vegan.
- citric acid, which is an edible acid found in fruits like lemon and added for flavoring and preserving.
- pectin, which in simple terms is a complex gelatinous sugar. Used for texture and taste
- Natural and Artificial flavor, which to me always sounds very vague
- Concentrated Lychee Juice, there it is but why is it less than apple?
- Potato Starch, a carbohydrate
- emulsifiers, are used to make food more resistant to melting and help with texture
- and finally Carnauba wax is used for the same reasons as emulsifiers but not lumped into their category on the package.
- as a little note they are nice enough at the end to list the two main ingredients that might cause allergies.
How do they taste?

After I had these candies for the very first time it made me seek out other lychee flavored items like lychee teas and slushies to see if they were consistent with that taste, and as a matter of fact I found that they are. There is a subtly sweet taste to them that makes your mouth water, but aren’t overly sweet or sour. They deliver that lychee taste as good as any other candy might yet with a unique and somewhat thick texture and powder on top of the candy. Now they are not as sweet as the earlier foreshadowing forewarned they might be. Although they are basically only a bunch of sugars in a different form, they have less sugar than the previous candy, sour boys, that I reviewed. They taste about as sweet as a real fruit might taste to me. Because of that, they are also one of my personal favorite candies on the market. They are harder for me to find in my town as only one store really carries them but I always grab them when I can. Although my favorite flavor of theirs is peach, they were sold out of peach.
Closing.
With all that said I would rate this candy a 9/10. I absolutely love this candy and every time I do make my way to that grocer, I always cop a bag for myself to eat while gaming or studying. I nibbled on them as I wrote this out today and I can never seem to get enough of them. I highly recommend this brand and type of candy.
