How Terraria Kept Me Sane.

I would love to start out this blog with my review system I plan to implement for games. I will have two ratings, one a more simple yes or no metric on whether or not I simply enjoyed the game. The other will be a score out of a hundred. So without further ado let’s get into this.

Now it is common knowledge I would think that Terraria is an amazing game; so to ask myself whether I enjoyed it or not is like asking if asphalt is black or if the sky is blue. The simple answer is that YES I absolutely enjoy Terraria. If I had to say where it ranks on my list of favorite games of all time it is easily in the top 5, right up there with minecraft, Fire Emblem, and the dark souls series.

So I enjoy the game more than I can even put into words, but why? Well I will try my best to encapsulate why even though I am sure the words do not do it justice. It all starts with the begging of the game. As you may well know some games have weaker starts and some games come out of the gate full force and I would say that Terraria is the latter and no where near the former.

My small and very recent start up in a new Terraria world. The possibilities are endless

As you can see above, Even the start of the game can provide you with areas that already seem picturesque. It makes the goal of the game pretty apparent to players and it throws them into a unique and lovely world to explore. One can do whatever they want right from the start, They can mine for ore, build a house, go straight to the underworld, the possibilities are endless. It lets the player learn on their own and trusts them to do anything that they want instead of hold your hand. This I think is the right way to do tutorials, or at the least keep them minimal (I’m looking at you Kingdom hearts 2 as a peak offender of this).

I choose the route that some players pick even in minecraft where they just hunker down in a makeshift house until they get inspiration, find a suitable location, or just want to grind gear or equipment first. I find that to be the way I like to play and I love to incorporate a bunch of different block types into a house and often try to make a new type of house each play through. Thus I am waiting for a design inspiration to strike and I know that it will.

The game not only hits hard at the begging but it stays consistently amazing through the whole session and continues to follow this philosophy, veering from it minorly from time to time but nothing drastic. It has an amazing soundtrack, one that is instantly recognizable and adds to the atmosphere and feel of the game. The soundtrack again hits instantly and gives you a sense of freedom, choice, and wonderment as you find this place your new home away from home.

This is how it kept me sane during many years of my life. I would have to say that I played this game around 5 times through, One for each major build type, and every single time I drop into the world I just get a massive smile on my face and the feelings of excitement, the warm fuzzies. This is a game that I can never seem to get enough of because in the early years of playing it Terraira gave me escapism through the exploration and creation of a new world, and now it offers me this plus nostalgia on the easier times in my life. It reminds me of a summer morning during high-school when me and my friends and family would all play together without a care in the world, often staying up till 3 or 4 in the morning just grinding gear and precious metals like gold.

The game not only plays well, handles the player interactions with the game well, and has slappin songs, it also is stunning visually. this is where I know some may not agree with me as there are people who do not find pixel graphics or art appealing, but it is my favorite medium for video game art if I am being honest. On that front the game blows it out of the water. I find the game to be amazingly stunning graphically and the idea that you can create whatever you set your mind too, the graphics help add to the flair and depth of your amazing home base or boss arena!

My most recent completed melee build file. Look at how stunning those graphics can be even when it gets really busy on screen! I love plague doctors and bird imagery hence the minor theme.

As far as the details go when it comes to the gameplay, the combat does exactly what you want when it comes to a sandbox game like this. It keeps it simple and easy to learn right from the get go, but then it adds more and more layers of depth like flight mobility and different properties to weapons. The bosses scale in difficulty magnificently and the entire experience with combat, maneuverability, and just handling and control with a mouse and keyboard are fantastic. They knew exactly what they wanted out of this game and they went with it.

The only con about the game that I can think about is the pacing for hardmode. I am ok with this but I had a friend where hardmode slightly soured his experience because the sheer difficulty spike in boss difficulty and enemy difficulty, as well as the heavier focus on grinding accessory drops and boss slaying to the exploration and mining. This is something that for me made the game more enjoyable but it definitely is a tone shift in a sense within the game after they set up a tone with the early easy mode section of the game.

In total, I would rate Terraria a whopping 98/100. It kept me sane through escapism through stressful times in my life and just kept me undeniably happy and enthused during the higher, non-stressful points in my life as well. If you for some reason have not given this game a try and you know you like minecraft or sandboxy games or just exploration games in general I highly, HIGHLY recommend you try it.
